The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious and heartfelt musical about a group of kids competing for the title of champion—but really, it’s about so much more. Each character brings their own quirks, insecurities, and hopes to the mic, and by the end, it becomes clear: you don’t have to win the Bee to be enough.
For this production, when designing the marketing materials, I wanted to reflect the show’s bright, chaotic energy and deep emotional core. I used a mix of playful fonts to represent each character’s individuality, leaned into a nostalgic elementary school aesthetic, and kept the color palette fun and bold—like the kids themselves. Every visual choice was made to highlight the show’s big heart and bigger personalities.

MEET THE SPELLERS
These promo photos were designed to spotlight the individuality of each speller while staying cohesive within the show's overall branding. I styled and directed each shoot to capture the essence of the characters—whether it was Leaf’s joyful chaos or Olive’s quiet sweetness—while using a consistent background, playful poses, and branded typography to tie it all together. The result: a vibrant, character-first campaign that celebrates the heart and humor of Spelling Bee.

ABOUT THe show
Six quirky kids face off in the battle of their lives: a county spelling bee where the stakes are high, the words are wild, and the pressure is real. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee follows an eclectic group of students—each with their own unique personality, backstory, and reason for competing—as they navigate adolescence, awkwardness, and the fear of failure under the bright lights of the auditorium.
As the competition unfolds, we meet characters like Olive Ostrovsky, a shy girl longing for connection; Leaf Coneybear, a cape-wearing oddball who surprises even himself; and Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre, a driven activist-in-the-making with two supportive (and intense) dads. Guided by equally eccentric adults, the students discover that winning isn’t everything—sometimes just showing up and being yourself is the biggest triumph of all.
Equal parts hilarious and heartfelt, Spelling Bee is a celebration of imperfection, self-acceptance, and the strange, unforgettable mess of growing up.
